Signed into law by Governor Cuomo on August 11th, New York’s seatbelt law requires all motor vehicle passengers, regardless of age, to wear a seatbelt. This includes the backseat. Previously, only passengers 16 and under were required to wear a seatbelt in the backseat. The law will take effect on Sunday, November 1st.  AAA New York State spearheaded support for the bill, garnering 26 organizations representing traffic safety, public health organizations, health care professionals and the insurance industry to sign on with AAA to support a rear seatbelt requirement. Between 2010 and 2019 nearly 26,000 New Yorkers were killed or injured while riding unbuckled in the backseat. This new seatbelt law will save lives and prevent serious injuries on New York’s roadways.

So remember: front or back, buckle up. It’s the law!
